Hildegarde C. Crowley

February 27, 2008

Hildegarde Charlotte Crowley, 73, of Phoenix passed away on February 27, 2008. She is survived by her four sons, Patrick Crowley and wife Amy Crowley of Scottsdale, Michael Crowley of Phoenix, Terrence Crowley and wife Jennifer Crowley of Glendale and Thomas Crowley Jr. of Phoenix. Hildegarde was born on January 7, 1935 and has been a lifelong resident of Arizona. She was a catholic nun in the Immaculate Heart Order until age 27. During this time she taught grade school and there are many Phoenix residents which remember Sister Charlotte as their grade school teacher. In 1967 Hildegarde married Thomas Crowley and started their family right away. As a mother of four boys Hildegarde was very active in the community with sports, school activities and church. It was not uncommon to see Hildegarde leading the cheerleading squad for her sons Pop Warner football teams or dressing up in festive fashion to celebrate every holiday with her children. Once Hildegarde’s boys were well into school she started a job in the Smitty’s bakery on 43rd Ave and McDowell. It was in this position that Hildegarde’s zest for life and impact in the community was truly noticed. Hildegarde just didn’t work at Smitty’s, she became known in the community as the “cake lady” where she brightened many lives in small ways every day. No one knew what St. Patrick’s day could be until they saw her in action in full Irish Lass attire working her magic! Hildegrade just didn’t attend parades, she literally became a part of them! Her strong Christian faith was a tremendous source of inspiration for all those who watched her fight health issues in the last few years. The lessons of Hildegarde’s passion for life and strength of spirit will never be forgotten! Virginia L. Jennie Lattimore

February 26, 2008

Virginia “Jennie” Lattimore

After a short but courageous battle with lung cancer, Jennie passed away on February 26, surrounded by the love and embrace of her cherished family. Jennie was born on November 22, 1925 in Carbon Hill, Alabama. She moved to Arizona as a young child. She spent many of her early years in the Verde Valley area. By about age ten, her fearless and independent spirit emerged as she would often drive her friends to school while they would hang off the running board of an old Whippet automobile; at least until the local sheriff put a stop to it. Jennie also spent time in Miami-Globe, AZ and Alabama as she continued to grow into the beautiful woman she was to become. While living in Bisbee, AZ she met her soul mate, John Jay Lattimore. He was immediately attracted to her vivacious and feisty personality. They married in August of 1946 and shared a lifetime of boundless adventure and unmatched love. When Jennie decided to take flying lessons, Jay would sit patiently at the end of the runway until she safely landed. No one could throw a party like Jennie and Jay. It quite simply was their trademark. The one party that surpassed all others was the one held each Christmas Eve. They had the opportunity to explore many local and distant destinations by plane, car, RV, houseboat or motorboat. They shared many adventures in the company of treasured friends. They loved fishing, happy hours, casinos and especially family. Although Jennie didn’t have a passion for cooking, she was famous for her velvety smooth and potent eggnog, chili, fried chicken, fried catfish, stew and other delectable southern foods. Jennie and Jay could often be found dancing & listening to country music at the family owned Handlebar-J in Scottsdale. They were always entertained by the Herndon Brothers Band and sister Gwen’s gracious hospitality. Both Jennie and Jay were involved with charitable service organizations such as Kiwanis and Shriners’. Jennie made many lasting friendships with her Jesterette sisters. The blessing of grandchildren brought a new and delightful dimension into their lives. They took immense pride in each of their individual accomplishments! After Jay passed away in 1989, Jennie continued to travel in her RV visiting friends in Canada and elsewhere. Her dear and loyal friends became the centerpiece of a fulfilled life. She treasured becoming GiGi Great-Grandma with the arrival of her great-grandchildren. Jennie loved a good party, her crossword puzzles, the Wheel of Fortune, shopping and slot machines. She never ceased to amaze those around her with her uncanny ability to find the “hot” machine. She adored her many nieces and nephews and they have continued to repay her love with gratitude and affection.

Jennie lived her life by example. Her legacy cannot be measured by riches or worldly possessions, but rather by the love she has shared, the lives she has touched and the memories she has bestowed. Her radiant smile and loving spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of her adoring family and friends forever. In celebration of a life well lived, we invite you to raise a glass on Monday evening in honor of this beloved and special lady: Jennie Lattimore.

Jennie is survived by her family: daughter, Cheryl Wamsley Jerry and son, John Lattimore Kathy; grandchildren: Michelle Parisian Alan, Alanna Foudy Ken, Josh Lattimore & Ashleigh Lattimore, Scott Wamsley Michelle, Stephanie Middleton James; great-grandchildren: Brianna, CJ & Donovan Parisian; Cole and Tate Foudy, Mia & Hanna Wamsley; sisters: Joyce Augenstein, Mary Miller, Connie O’Daniel and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

Jennie’s family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff of Hospice of the Valley for their committed and loving care. We especially want to thank our ‘angels’ Mary Helen and Kay. You have been our lifeline!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jennie’s memory to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 or the Shriner’s Children Hospital, 552 N. 40th St., Phoenix, AZ 85008.
