Margaret J. Barnes Crawford

90, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on June 28, 2009. She was born September 30, 1918 in Wichita, Kansas to Emory and Elizabeth Barnes. She graduated from Tuskegee University with a Bachelor degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation. While at Tuskegee, she was a member of the National Track and Field Championship Team creating a new world’s indoor record in the 440 yard relay. Tuskegee’s Athletic Hall of Fame elected her as a member for excellence in Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field. Her professional teaching career was interrupted when during World War II she joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and attained the rank of First Lieutenant commanding more than 300 enlisted women before being honorably discharged in l947. Margaret received her Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and taught at Delaware State Teacher’s College and later for 26 years in the Phoenix Elementary School District. In addition to teaching youngsters, she has sponsored students in the Arizona Jr. Olympics, participated in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Urban League, Association of Retired Teachers, Phoenix Tuskegee University Alumni Club, and the National United States Olympic Society. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles, sister Zora Lecompte and two brothers; Emory and Carl Barnes. She is survived by her brother, Carver Barnes and sisters-in-law Barbara Barnes, Sonia Barnes, Jan Barnes White and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 10:30 am, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix.
