Glendening, Anastasia Elizabeth
97, of Glendale, passed away on Feb. 2, 2009. Born Nov. 5, 1911, to Elizabeth Greene and Michael C. Barnes in Columbus, Ohio. She attended primary school first in Gary, Indiana, and then moved with her family in 1918 to New Castle, PA where she attended St. Mary’s Elementary and New Castle High. She worked at the Jameson Hospital in New Castle for many years prior to moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1951 with her first husband Cecil Porter. After arriving, she began working for the City of Phoenix. In 1963, she was widowed. Two years later, she married another widow, P. Fred Glendening, who was also working for the City as the Public Works Director. He predeceased her in 2001. She was also predeceased by her mother, father, and siblings Agnes Daugherty, Mary Samuels, Bill Barnes, and Robert Barnes, and stepdaughter Freda Blodgett. She is survived by her brother Jim Barnes of Phoenix, nephews Michael & Patrick Barnes, nieces Bethanne Newman and Kathleen Wright, stepdaughters Bobbie Araujo, Jody Rugenstein and Alice Zinn and many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. Services are being held this Sat. February 7th, 2009 at 9:00 am at St. Mary’s Basilica, 231 N. 3rd St., in downtown Phoenix.
