Antonio Tony Padilla Duran passed away peacefully Monday afternoon in his home with his family at his side. He was 85. Tony was born on November 8, 1923 to Margaret and Arismen Duran, in St. Johns, AZ. Tony graduated from McNary High School and joined the United States Navy in 1942. He was a chief radioman who earned both a good conduct medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He married Anna Marie Castillo on April 22, 1946 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ. Tony graduated with an accounting degree from Lampson Business College. He belonged to the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and was a member of St. Agnes and then St. Theresa parishes. In 1961 he bought the Tee Pee Tap Room and, with his long hours and hard work, turned this neighborhood Mexican Restaurant into a landmark family business.
He was an inspiration to all of those who ever worked for him and alongside him. He established a warm friendly place for families to eat, drink and relax. For him, it was all about families.
Tony was blessed with the greatest friends a man could have. “Tony’s Cronies,” as Anna would affectionately call them, spent many an afternoon in animated conversations while cooling off at the north end of the bar.
Antonio Padilla Duran was a true patriarch to his family. He was strong, devoted, loyal, intelligent and generous. He loved his work. He loved his life. But most of all, he loved his wife, Anna, and his children. We will all miss him dearly.
Tony is preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret and Arismen, his brothers Albert, Benny, Nino, Carlos, Abel and his sister Mary.
He is survived by his loving wife Anna, their children, Tony Jr., Carlos, Kathy and her husband Zip Killeen, Dianna and her husband Bob Shugrue; his grandchildren, Tony III, Anitra and her husband Mitch Burr, Jeffrey and his wife Tameria Killeen, Julianna and her husband Brandon Martinez, Andrea Shugrue, Ryan Shugrue; and his great grandchildren, Delano, Jacob and Ainslie, along with many nieces and nephews.
