BATES, LARRY JOE
20 December 1935 – 7 September 2023
Son of George J. and Violet A. Bates
Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Larry grew up with a love of animals and the outdoors, caring for pets and enjoying hunting and fishing. He attended vocational high school where he learned the drafting, plumbing and construction trades which would become his livelihood.
After high school, Larry joined the US Army, earning certification as a paratrooper and tank driver. Following his military service, he worked in the trades and became a licensed plumbing contractor.
In 1963, Larry met and married Enriqueta “Kati” Enriquez. Together they raised a family- daughters Laurie, Roseanna and Patty, son George. They welcomed and adored grandchildren Spencer, Orion, Chakira, Nicholas, Philip, Alison, Julian, Quinn and Miles.
After decades of plumbing work, Larry’s health necessitated a change. He retrained and worked at small engine-, equipment and boat repair. He generously helped his neighbors. He also enjoyed making wood crafts for his grandchildren, and fishing with his friends.
Larry celebrated forty-seven years of sobriety this year, with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous. In AA, he maintained his sobriety and helped others to do so as a sponsor. He found community, purpose and fishing buddies there.
Larry supported and participated with Kati in her compassionate volunteer work for seniors and refugees. They enjoyed working together for others.
His final years were spent in companionship and mutual care with Kati. They persevered through ailments and old age for as long as they could, and died just days apart September 3rd & 7th at home with their loved ones.
Larry was a lifelong dog lover. Donations might be made in his memory to AZHumane.org
