Johanna Joann Broderick Phalen.
The matriarch has passed.
Johanna Broderick Phalen left us- -better for having known her- -on October 22, 2005.
She was a woman of many contradictions, and trying to capture her essence is as tricky as trying to corral quicksilver on a Teflon pan.
She had a frugal nature, but a generous spirit.
She longed to be cared for, but jealously guarded her independence.
She prized cleanliness and order, but was not fastidious.
She was a woman of faith, even when it appeared her faith had abandoned her.
She was a saver, but gave away much of herself.
She held passionate opinions, but was apolitical.
She fancied the water, but could not swim.
She loved good food, but was a terrible cook.
She was not an intellectual, but was an avid reader and a staunch advocate of education.
She was not an artist, but crooners could bring her to tears.
She was not a financier, but invested heavily in her children.
She claimed no vices, but loved her wine and cigarettes.
She was not vain, but appearances mattered.
She longed for exotic travel, but spent her summers in San Diego.
She was quick to judge, but was quicker to forgive.
She was practical, but was an idealist.
She was unsentimental, but she was romantic.
She loved a handsome man, a good joke, a stiff drink, a smooth smoke, and a lively debate.
Johanna will be remembered by her family for her love and devotion. She will be remembered by everyone for her fierce loyalty, her generosity of spirit, her infectious smile, her ceaselessly practical nature, her quick and inquisitive mind, her fierce independence, her active and varied social life, her love of reading, travel and the sea.
Above all, Johanna should be remembered simply as a good and decent woman who saw adversities and tried to overcome them, saw opportunities and tried to take advantage of them, saw her children and tried to raise them.
Johanna Broderick was born on September 30, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated with a bachelor
