In Memorial

Joseph Ham, 74, of Phoenix, AZ died Friday, May 2 after a long illness. He was born and raised in South Portland, Maine graduating from Cheverus High School in 1951. After high school, Joe joined the Air Force, serving from 1951 to 1955, and he was stationed in Korea from 1952 to 1953 during the Korean War. Joe married the former Constance Fox in 1955 and together they had four sons. Joe was a lifelong “car nut” who was always eager to talk about cars, and he especially enjoyed watching races on television and in person. He was a natural salesman and in the course of his 30 year career in various aspects of the automobile industry he developed a large and loyal clientele. Joe was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed boating and fishing, hunting and other outdoor pursuits. His success as a hunter and fisherman led friends to encourage him to become a Maine Guide. After moving out west, he discovered “rock hunting” with his longtime partner, Natalie Harper. Together the two of them, and their dogs, would search the desert for unusual finds. He and Nat also loved to travel to historical sites, including Indian villages and Mount Rushmore. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Augustus Ham. He is survived by his partner of 31 years, Natalie Harper who moved from Maine to Phoenix with him and was lovingly by his side ever since. Joe is also survived by his sister Mary Berry and her husband Daile of Sun City West, Arizona. Also surviving are four sons, Robert and his wife Faith of Los Gatos, California; Stephen of Scarborough, Me; William and his wife Anne-Marie also of Scarborough and Matthew and his wife Dawn of Cape Elizabeth. Joe is also survived by eight grandchildren. Services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 6, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix, Arizona.
