Kathleen “Kay” Keenan
81, passed away peacefully June 29, 2009. Born May 1, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN. Kay was raised by her parents in Minneapolis, and had 3 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated with a Bachelor of Art Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota, was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, and worked at Dayton’s Dept. Store. While in college, she met and fell in love with William “Bill” Keenan. They married in 1951, and had 5 children. Upon graduation, Kay taught high school art in Minneapolis, and Bill earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. They were stationed in Newburg, NY and Metz, France. After honorable discharge from the Air Force, Kay and Bill returned to Minneapolis. Bill worked in the advertising industry, and Kay was a homemaker. In 1971, the family moved to Phoenix, where Bill held various marketing and management positions for Armour Foods Corp. Kay volunteered at Hopi Elementary, kept the kids busy with various art, community and sports activities, and worked part-time for Goldwater’s Department Store. Kay also taught religious education at St. Theresa Catholic Church, and served on its Liturgy Committee; she was well-known for the beautiful banners she created for the altar. In 1985, Bill’s employer, Armour Foods, was sold to the ConAgra Corp. in Nebraska, and they moved to Omaha. There, Kay began her passion for quilting, starting another artistic chapter in her life. Upon retirement from ConAgra, Kay and Bill returned to Phoenix in 1990. Since her return to Arizona, Kay kept busy creating her beautiful quilts, sewing, and working until the age of 75 in the Children’s Dept. at Dillard’s Dept. Store in Scottsdale. Kay is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter, Colleen John Wynne; son, Kevin Anne Keenan; son, Tim Lisa Keenan; daughter, Maureen Alex Vakula; daughter, Kara Theo Goldin; 17 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson. A Visitation will be held Monday, July 6, from 6-8 p.m., and a Rosary at 7 p.m., at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, July 7, 10 a.m., at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Rd. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
