Kathleen Sullivan Henes died at home on Monday, February 2 after a brief illness at age 91. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, who actively lived her Catholic faith, reaching out to so many people with her warmth, compassion, and positive outlook on life. She was blessed with a sharp mind and independence until the end.
She spent most of her life in service to others. Before her marriage in 1952 in Phoenix to David E. Henes, she was a social worker in San Francisco; first, at Letterman General Hospital and later for Catholic Charities.
Born in Duluth, Minn. in 1917, she graduated from the College of St. Scholastica. She received her master’s degree in social work from USC. After marriage, she devoted her time to her growing family.
She was active in the Christ Child Society in Detroit, a Catholic charitable organization devoted to helping disadvantaged children. She was elected president in 1975, and served two terms. In 1980, she was named their Woman of the Year.
She returned to Phoenix in 1982 with her husband following his retirement. She organized a Phoenix chapter of the Christ Child Society in 1984 and served two terms as their first president. She saw the Society grow from a handful of dedicated women to a dynamic organization of more than 250 members. In 1997, she was awarded the Mary Virginia Merrick Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the Christ Child Society in Phoenix. She was active as a volunteer in many charitable projects for children. Until three years ago, she worked in the library of St. Matthew Elementary School, reading to children and helping to make sure the doors of the library remained open.
She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served as a pastoral minister and perpetual adorer for many years.
Her husband preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Susan de Queljoe and Martha David Fogler, both of Scottsdale; and two sons, Stephen D. Julia of Birmingham, MI and R. Peers Henes Beverly of Phoenix; a sister Mrs. Kenneth Mary Cardwell of Berkeley, CA; a brother, William J. Lois Sullivan of Phoenix, and 11 grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ Child Society, 4633 N. 54th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 5, from 6:00-8:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:00 pm at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 6, at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11001 North 40th Street, Phoenix.
