MEDLAND, KATHRYN “KAY” JEAN DOYLE

May 8, 2018 Leave A Condolence

Kathryn Medlund obit

Kathryn Jean “Kay” (Doyle) Medland, of Phoenix, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 2, 1939 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Wilhelmina and James Doyle, Kay grew up in Detroit and moved to Arizona in her early 30s. Kay was the loving wife of Jim Medland. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jim Doyle and Doug Doyle; and sister, Jackie Mills. Kay is survived by her sons, Rick (Becky) Story and Jim Medland; daughters, Cheri Trager, Suzy Atelian and Sharon Hawkins; brother, Tom (Nancy) Doyle; sister, Pat Shuffler; grandchildren, Jennifer Story, Brian Story, Justin Drewisch, Brandon Atelian, Taylor Atelian, Tyler Kmetko, Sarah Hawkins, Wesley Hawkins, Kyle Thompson, Stephanie Thompson and Elijah Trager; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She also leaves behind her cat, Sheena. Kay loved to bake and often made beautiful, elaborate cakes for special family occasions. She had a love of music and grew up singing with her siblings as they all gathered around their mother at the dining room table, reading sheet music that their mother would hold. Kay also enjoyed flying with her husband, Jim and they spent many a weekend taking off out of Deer Valley Airport for jaunts around Arizona. Kay was a wonderful seamstress and loved to sew; and she loved animals, taking in many a stray cat over the years. Always kind, patient, and incredibly accepting, to be loved by Kay meant never questioning her whole-hearted support. She had a wonderful sparkle in her beautiful blue eyes and though Kay was small in size, she was an example of tremendous physical and emotional strength and always put the care and well-being of others ahead of her own. To the very end, she was concerned about everyone else and wanted to make sure her family would be ok without her. Kay’s family wishes to extend a very special thank you to Deb Shumway and all of the kind and compassionate staff of Hospice of the Valley (Sherman Home). Friends and family are welcome to attend a Celebration of Kay’s Life on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 6:00 P.M., with Visitation 2 hours prior, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd, Phoenix. Pastor Mike Sheldon of St. Mark Lutheran Church will officiate. Per Kay’s wishes, her ashes will be buried in the Barnes Family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport, IN.
