Monica G. McMindes
passed away on July 1, 2009, at the age of 102, at the home of her beloved daughter Clemence E. Newcomb. Monica was born in St. Mary’s, Kansas, on March 30, 1907. A gifted mezzo-soprano, she sang the role of Hugette in Rudolph Frimil’s The Vagabond King. In later years, she was a devoted member of the choir at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, under the direction of George Dunn S. J. Known for her warm and generous nature, she was the longest-serving volunteer at The Marian Shop and a member of The Senior Angels Society. She and the now-deceased John F. McMindes, Sr. moved to Phoenix in the early 1930’s. Responding to civic concerns, she became a Chief of Elections officer, and was active in voter registration. Surviving to cherish her memory are two daughters: Monica F. McMindes of Bethesda, Maryland, and Clemence E. Newcomb William of Phoenix; a son, John F. McMindes, Jr. Patricia of Plano, Texas; grandchildren John F. McMindes, III, of Cypress, Texas; Mrs. Molly Stacey of Austin, Texas; Mrs. Jennifer Gwinn of Little Elm, Texas; great grandchildren Hannah, Daniel, Haley, Kelsey, Jake, and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. A Rosary will be recited at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
