Patricia Starr Newquist

Patricia Starr Newquist passed away peacefully on November 17, 2022, in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was born March 21, 1934, in Denver, Colorado. Pat was the only child of the late Col. Clifford Starr and Madeline Carey. A graduate of St. Rose College, she taught at Cobleskill, NY Central School. On October 12, 1957, she married Harvey Newquist, her loving husband of 65 years who survives her.

The family moved to Phoenix in 1973, where Pat continued to live her strong Catholic faith. As a member of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, she was an active volunteer with St. Thomas the Apostle School, Brophy Mothers Guild, Xavier Prep, Recording for the Blind, Catholic Diocese Crozier Gala, Papal Visit of Pope John Paul II, Order of Malta, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Pat’s English ancestry includes Dr. Comfort Starr, a Pilgrim physician in Plymouth Colony in 1634. She spent her childhood years in several states during her father’s military career. She travelled extensively throughout the world, visiting many nations and cultures. She was a member of the Circumnavigation Club – highlighted by supersonic jet flight. These experiences gave her a special appreciation for the blessings and hopes of our country.

Pat’s greatest virtue was the love and commitment she gave, both to Harvey and their large, growing family. During her lengthy illness, the outpouring of care and support she received was a testament to Pat’s years of devotion towards those around her. The love and values that she fostered continue to be received and given among those she cared for, and is a tribute to her legacy

Pat is survived by her eight children: Harvey (Trini) Newquist, Lee (Janeen) Newquist, Anne (Mark) Folger, Bob (Peggy) Newquist, Eddie (Kirsten) Newquist, Margi (Terry) Johnson, Jimmy (Nicole) Newquist, and Michael (Kristy) Newquist. She has 21 grandchildren: Madeline, Katherine, Clinton, Wyatt, Jessica, Alexandra, Jacque (Tillin), Brandon, Ryan, Tyler, Ashley, Connor (Ali), Reilly, Aiden, Devin, Cody, Boston, Colton, Jordan, Colin, Hayden and 3 great grandsons; Ashton, Clark, and Kurt. She has many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law Terry Cortellessa, and grandson Kyle Johnson.

The family is grateful for the compassionate caregivers at Mayo Clinic and Bernadette Reidy MD, who helped make the past 20 years of her life so memorable. And they are thankful for the recent assistance given by the staffs at Belmont Village and Hospice of the Valley. Father Dan Sullivan S.J, a dear friend who has celebrated many Newquist family moments of joy and sadness, presided at a Mass of Christian Burial on November 29, 2022, at his Ignatius Chapel, with interment at St. Francis Cemetery.

Contributions in honor of Pat can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
