Annette Mary Simms Kunes

December 6, 1942 — January 7, 2026

Scottsdale

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Annette Mary Simms Kunes, age 83. She peacefully departed this life on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 7, 2026, in Scottsdale, AZ, after a long battle with heart disease. Known affectionately as “Ann” and “Nonnie” to her cherished friends and family, Annette exemplified kindness, grace, compassion, humor, and friendship while always expressing gratitude for her blessed life.

Born on December 6, 1942, to Charles Katyll, a Chicago Fire Captain, and Lucille Pontarelli, the eldest daughter of Michael A. Pontarelli, a respected construction contractor and hotelier who served as the Vice President of The Kirkeby Exchange. Following her parents' divorce, Annette lived a humble life as a tomboy with her adoring father and his sister’s family until his passing in 1954. Later, she reconnected with her mother, and at the age of 18, she took charge of her mother’s healthcare and financial interests, where she learned how to invest in the stock market.

Annette took great pride in her health and enjoyed exercising, especially swimming. She was a proud member of the “Mermaids,” a swimming group at the Arizona Country Club, and she also loved golfing. Additionally, she was an active member and organizer of the women’s group, “Western Greeters.” Annette earned a certificate as a Medical Assistant, where she worked with a dermatologist in Scottsdale for over ten years.

A devoted wife, mother, friend, and community activist, Annette also had a deep connection to her faith as a Catholic. Her first marriage was to Richard W. Simms at the age of 18. She leaves behind her pride and joy: their two daughters, Denise M. Petri and Donna A. Pallo, along with her grandchildren, Annie Pallo, Michael Petri, and Dean Petri, as well as her son-in-law, John Stampekakis. Annette is survived by her adoring current husband, Kenneth R. Kunes, of Phoenix. Her family will forever cherish the love she brought into their lives.
