Charles R. Schulz

October 25, 1922 — April 20, 2024

Phoenix

Charles R. Schulz,  101, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Bloomington, IL passed away April 20th, 2024.  A memorial service Mass will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 11th at the Beatitudes Campus in Phoenix, AZ with final burial to be at a later date at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IL.

He was born October 25, 1922 in Clifton, Iowa, the son of Otto F. and Nettie (Peifer) Schulz. He married Veronica A. Quinn on October 22, 1949 at Visitation Parish in Chicago, Illinois.

Surviving are his wife of 74 years, Veronica A. Schulz, Phoenix, AZ; one son, Chuck (Caren) Schulz, McAlester, OK; three daughters, Lisa (Mark) Allan, Centerville, OH; Sherrie (Mike) McAndrews, Bloomington, IL; and Laurie (Frank) Verderame, Paradise Valley, AZ; twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant daughters (Mary and Linda) and five brothers.

Charles graduated from Bloomington High School in 1942.  Later that year he would enlist in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-114.  The squadron took part in the Pacific campaign during WWII and saw action at the Battle of Peleliu.  After the war, he would begin a long career as a letter carrier for the Normal, IL Post Office.

Charles was a man of many talents, especially when it came to performing renovations around the house.  Cabinet building, carpentry, siding and bricklaying were a few of the skills he mastered on his own.  Camping was a family activity he loved and was a means he utilized to show his family much of the country.  A small motor home was later utilized by Charles and Veronica to travel across country to see the sights and to visit family.

After retiring, Charles and Veronica made the move to the warmer weather of Phoenix, AZ.  Moving to a home in a retirement community allowed Charles to spend time on many of his hobbies.  Working with stained glass, swimming, woodworking, tinkering in the garage with items which required fixing and a little golf became things he enjoyed.  He also spent many hours in his backyard caring for his beloved fruit trees.

Large family get togethers were another thing he thoroughly enjoyed.  Over 30 family members gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday.  Any family gathering meant that a deck of cards would come out and Euchre would be the game of choice.  Charles was a masterful Euchre player as evidenced by all his family members wanting him as a partner.

He was a long time member of Holy Trinity Parish in Bloomington, IL. He lived a long great
life and will be dearly missed by all his family and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations may
be made to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, AZ.
