In Loving Memory of My Son, Mateo
From the day you were born, I carried you in my arms. You were tiny and fragile, facing challenges that no child should have to endure. From that very first moment, I knew I would do everything in my power to overcome every obstacle that came our way.
When your birth mother left you at the hospital, I made the decision to love you, care for you, protect you, and support you with everything I had. You became my son, and I became your dad.
When you were diagnosed with Ring Chromosome 14 Syndrome, I knew another challenge was ahead of us. But you had a warmth, a love, and an eagerness to live that inspired me every single day. Together, we faced every challenge and every roadblock, always making sure you received the best care and, most importantly, unconditional love.
You faced so much. You had an arched aorta, which we were told would not be an issue as you grew. You developed epilepsy and endured seizures. Yet through it all, you fought every day to make your mark on this world.
You weren't just my son. You were special. Every day with you was a blessing. You were a gift from God, and that is why the name Mateo became so meaningful to us. Every day, you showed me your passion for life, your eagerness to face challenges, and your determination to give it your all.
Some days you laughed. Some days you showed us your mobility. And even though you were nonverbal, hearing you call me “Dada” and Grandma “Mom” meant everything to us. Those moments told me that you knew who we were and the important roles we played in your life.
On August 20, 2026, you were faced with your final challenge: letting go. Throughout your life, we held you in our arms, loved you, cared for you, and stood beside you. But in return, you gave us something far greater than we could ever have imagined. You gave us the gift of love. You taught us to challenge ourselves, to live, to learn, and to love more deeply than we ever knew possible.
Losing you is the greatest challenge I have ever faced, and I don't know if I will ever truly overcome it. I only know that I will carry you with me for the rest of my life. You gave me life in ways you could never understand. You made me a better man. You taught me strength, patience, compassion, and unconditional love. I thank you, my son, for choosing me to be your dad and for giving me the greatest gift of all—the gift of you.
Until we meet again, my son.
My love.
My Mateo.
Forever your dad.
