Elizabeth Ann Gruber passed away peacefully in Phoenix, Arizona on May 31, 2026 at the age of 96. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 10, 1930, she lived a long and full life centered on family, friendships, learning, and creativity.

Elizabeth was married twice, first to Marvin Darby and later to Frank Konicek. She had always wanted to have children and had five: Betty, Larry, Jeannie, Elizabeth, and Carolyn. She also enjoyed being a grandmother to Aaron, Laura, Hope, Greg, Kate, Emily, Ian, Grace, and Nicole. She is survived by all of them, including 4 great-grandchildren.

A determined and independent woman, Elizabeth worked hard all her life and returned to school as an adult and got a Master’s in Home Economics. She went on to learn sign language and taught in the Phoenix School for the Deaf. There she taught deaf high school students how to cook and sew until she retired.

After retirement, Elizabeth threw herself into the activities she loved: traveling with family and friends; organic gardening, painting, and reading. A life long seamstress, she made her own clothes, altered things for friends and family, and made numerous quilts. She painted every house she ever lived in. She was also a life-long fitness advocate – from the days of Jack LaLane on TV to going to the gym regularly and doing daily yoga into her 90’s.

Having grown up during the Great Depression, Elizabeth was frugal and practical throughout her life. She was well known for saving things “just in case” they might one day be needed. She prioritized time with family and friendships and loved to talk and laugh. She also had a competitive spirit, as anyone who played cards or Rummikub with her could tell you.

She was loved and will be missed by those who knew her and remembered for her resilience, independence, and creativity.

The family will hold a private Memorial service in her honor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Valley. This agency had a profound and positive effect on her last few years.
