Gregory B. Wingate, MD, 82 years young, passed away peacefully in January 2026 from a brief illness, with his wife by his side. Greg is survived by his partner and wife of 21 years, Sally C. Wingate, sisters Margie Elstun (Stan) and Carolyn Bamford (John), nephews Greg Elstun (Terra), Grant Wingate (Heather), Brandon Zimmerman (Haley), niece Mindy Lockhart (Chad), brother-in-law Mike Carroll (Lynne), and beloved grand nieces and nephews.
Greg was a remarkable renaissance man in his time, remembered as an exceptional Plastic Surgeon, accomplished athlete and extraordinary horseman and team roper. Greg graduated from Colorado College, KU Medical School, and was a Rockefeller Scholarship recipient. He completed residencies at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in LA and Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. Greg was an exceptional Plastic Surgeon for over 30 years in Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ, loved and highly respected by his colleagues, nurses and patients. His intelligence and dedication to his profession cannot be understated. Throughout his life Greg was an accomplished skier, diver, sailor, expert fly fisherman, chef, and horseman. After retirement Greg focused his attention on team roping and horsemanship. He was a longtime, very proud member of the Maricopa County Phoenix Mounted Posse, and of The Verde Vaqueros, completing 23 men’s rides with the Verde’s. Greg’s love of horses and animals began as a young boy in Topeka, Kansas riding horses on family ranches. That love never left him and he rode right up until his passing.
His heart was full of love for people, and he would do just about anything for his friends and family alike. Greg was so loved and will be sorely missed, and we thank everyone that loved and appreciated Greg for the remarkable man he was.
The family does request privacy at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Gregory B. Wingate, MD to the charity of your choice or any as follows: The Boys and Girls Club of The Valley, Horses Help or the Banner Health Foundation.
