Funeral Mass for Joseph Michael O’Neill, 72, of Phoenix, Arizona who passed away unexpectedly at his home in April 2025, will be said Monday, June 9, 2025, at 10:00AM at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, 24th Street and Palm Lane Phoenix, AZ, 85008. Burial at St. Francis Cemetery will take place June 10, 2025, at 9AM.
Joe was born April 11, 1953, in Davenport, Iowa to Joseph P. and Anne A. O’Neill. He was the youngest of their children. The family moved to Phoenix in April 1954. Joe celebrated his first birthday in their new home. He attended St. Agnes Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Gerard Catholic High School class of 1971. He attended Phoenix College. He worked several different jobs until he was hired at Honeywell Manufacturing where he was employed for over 40 years until his retirement so he could play more golf.
Joe was an avid sportsman. He camped and fished, rooted for the Diamondbacks, Suns, and Cardinals, loved college football, especially Notre Dame, the fighting Irish, just like his dad. Joe knew all the statistics, the scores, who got traded where, but golf was his game. He belonged to a Men’s League that played weekly at Palo Verde. If he wasn’t playing, he would drive the cart. His nephew, John, remembers Joe teaching him how to putt and drive. Joe returned to St. Agnes to help coach the 7th and 8th grade boy's baseball. He was so proud when they won the CYA Championship.
Most importantly, Joe loved his family, his friends, and his pets. He never missed a family event—birthdays, holidays, kids’ sports games—you name it, he was there. To his friends, he was loyal, and they could always count on him. We'll miss the weekly catchups, the “hey, what’s going on” phone calls, and the card that never missed any occasion.
Joe is survived by his sister, Kathleen Carlson, his brother and his wife, Terrence and Debbie O’Neill, two nieces Jennifer Jaroch and her husband Mike Matzelle, Jean Carlson, nephew John Carlson and his wife Carly, and five grandnephews, Samuel Jaroch, Ryan Jaroch, Luke Jaroch, Cooper Carlson, and Benjamin Carlson. Also, Contessa, the beautiful new kitten he adopted at Christmas. We love you, Brother, Uncle Joe. Rest in peace. May the wind be ever at your back.
