Katie Ellen (Burford) Bechtel, 77, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She left a legacy of creativity, inquisitiveness, and storytelling.

Born in Indianapolis, raised in Mt. Comfort, IN, Katie carried her Midwestern roots throughout her life. She spent her early adult years in Denver before settling in Phoenix, where she raised her family and built a life centered on art, education, and relationships.

Katie was a lifelong learner who put her bachelor's and master's degrees to use as a middle school and high school art teacher. Katie was a gifted educator who impacted the lives of more than 25,000 students over the course of her career. Her passion and dedication earned her recognition as Art Teacher of the Year for the Pacific Region. She didn’t just teach art—she helped her students see themselves and the world differently. A true artist at heart, Katie expressed her creativity through many mediums. Her work reflected her vibrant spirit and will be cherished by those who knew and loved her.

More than anything, Katie was devoted to her family. She shared a 55-year storybook marriage with her husband Terry, and was an active, loving presence in the lives of her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Jackie Burford, and sister Susie Chacon. She is survived by her husband Terry; children, Ashleigh, Graham, and Molly; granddaughter, Mikayla Pabst; and sister, Heather Carrozza.

Katie will be remembered for her warm smile, hearty laugh, and the way she made everyone feel fully seen and accepted. Her unconditional love, humor, and colorful storytelling left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Scottsdale, AZ, on June 13, 2026. For information, please contact Ashleigh at ashleigh.bechtel@gmail.com.
