Marie Burgess was born in Brazil, grew up in Brooklyn, built a life for her three children in Virginia, and eventually met her soulmate, Paul, when she was 44. They spent the next 45 years together in Arizona, when they weren’t travelling the world.
Marie encouraged you to be yourself, even if it wasn’t easy. Her idea of family was the biggest tent possible. She was inclusive before it was cool. Marie was an amazing cook. She would try any food and encouraged you to do the same. She cooked for others to enjoy, not herself. She was a great teacher and those in her family who cook do so because of her.
She was of strong faith and leaves behind family and friends who love and miss her- a husband, 4 children, 4 children in-laws, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 siblings, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Franciscan Renewal Center, 5802 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85253, on Friday, September 19th at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be sent to the Muscular Sclerosis Society, Spinal Muscular Association, Parkinson’s Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association.
