Philip G. Shaughnessey, 89, of Phoenix passed away on February 18, 2026. He was born in New York City to Leo and Nadine Shaughnessey. Philip dedicated his early life to serving his country. In 1953 he joined the United States Navy where he earned a National Defense Certificate. After his discharge he promptly joined the United States Army serving on active duty until 1959. Philip continued his service in the Reserves with a cumulative 43 years of military service to his country. After moving to Arizona, Philip worked as a Planning Technician for the City of Phoenix. One of his tasks was to lead a team that oversaw the naming of new streets in Phoenix. He was also dedicated to learning and higher education. He attended Phoenix College where he was named student body president and later went on the receive his bachelor’s degree. Philip was devoted to his Church having been a long-time member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He is survived by his sons Marcus Shaughnessey and Ilja Gregor; grandchildren Declan, Colton and Aria Shaughnessey and Ilja Gregor; his brother Michael Shaughnessey and sister Ann McCage.
Visitation and services will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, located at 5045 E. Thomas Rd, Phoenix AZ. The visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 10:15 AM. Eulogies will begin at 10:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Interment and military honors will be at 12:30 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix.
Donations in Philips honor may be made to the American Kidney Fund.
