Raymond Daniel Walker, known to those who loved him as “Ray,” “Raymo,” or “Skywalker,” passed away on March 12, 2026, at his home in Camp Verde, Arizona. He was 53 years old.
Ray lived a life marked by creativity, connection, and deep love for both people and the world around him. As a young adult, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he flourished in the hospitality industry, earning certifications in mixology and culinary arts. A gifted personal chef, Ray delighted friends and family with meals made from the heart—his homemade salsa and tamales becoming legendary among those fortunate enough to share his table.
Later, Ray worked as a lumberjack with the Department of Natural Resources in Grand Lake, Colorado. This season of life deepened his lifelong love for nature and the outdoors, a love that remained woven into who he was. Ray was a true artist. Whether he was preparing a meal, painting a canvas, or sitting behind his drum set bringing rhythms to life, he expressed himself fully and without reservation. He was also an avid reader, often immersed in the Bible, historical works, and even vintage dictionaries, which he read cover to cover in his fascination with the origins of words.
In 2016, Ray returned to Arizona, where he met his wife, Gretchen (née Kallemyn). Together, they later settled in the Verde Valley, seeking a quieter life away from the Phoenix heat. There, Ray continued his work in hospitality, forming meaningful connections with everyone he encountered. He had a rare gift: he never met a stranger. People felt seen, welcomed, and valued in his presence.
A lover of nature and a free spirit, Ray’s ashes will be scattered as he requested. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support local musicians and music education programs, honoring Ray’s passion for teaching children the joy of drumming.
