Richard Santos Gaño, a respected figure in private transportation and a celebrated athlete in his youth, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by his family. Born on October 31, 1967, in Phoenix, Richard's life was marked by dedication to both his profession and community, as well as a deep passion for sports and family.
A proud graduate of Alhambra High School’s Class of 1985, Richard distinguished himself not only academically but also athletically as a standout basketball player. His exceptional skill and determination on the court earned him a pivotal role in the 1984-1985 Alhambra Lions basketball squad, a team celebrated as one of the finest in the history of the Phoenix Union High School District Sports Hall of Fame. Notably, Richard contributed his talents as a coach alongside Phil Kemp, guiding the Phoenix Alhambra basketball team to the 1985 championship game. His outstanding accomplishments in basketball were further honored when he was inducted into the Phoenix Union High School Hall of Fame in December 2022—a testament to his lasting legacy in the sport.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Richard enjoyed a successful career in private transportation, where his professionalism and commitment earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Outside of work, he was an avid fan of Arizona Cardinals football and Phoenix Suns basketball, passions that reflected his lifelong love of competitive sports. Richard’s hobbies also included playing poker and attending movies, interests that brought balance and enjoyment to his life.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Olivia Cordova, and son-in-law, Ricky Cordova, as well as his son, Daniel Gaño. His brothers, Henry Gaño and Nachito Gaño, also survive him, continuing the family ties that were central to his life. He was preceded in death by his mother, Yolanda Rodriguez, and father, Ignacio Gaño.
A memorial service to honor Richard’s life will be held on June 19, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, located at 4800 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018. This gathering will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and all who knew him to reflect on his contributions and celebrate the enduring impact he made in both his personal and professional spheres.
