My fiancé and I were able to bring our beautiful baby boy, Soul Ontiveros Puente, into this world on 01/07/2026. When he was born, he had minor trouble eating. He was only in taking 10 ML every 2 hours, and on 01/08/2026, he was able to intake 14 ML and then 17 ML which made the hospital feel comfortable enough to send him home. He came home. He was able to enjoy his mom, dad, and 2-year-old big sister. She even got to help us feed him. Although we had him home with us, getting him to eat more than 10 ML’s was proving to be a chronic issue. My wonderful fiancé had a strange feeling that this issue was more than just concerning. He started to feel slightly cold, and his skin began feeling clammy. We immediately rushed him to Arrowhead Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he was immediately put on several interventions, including a breathing tube. They provided hope for Destiny and I, informing us that he was stable and going to be okay as long as they could transport him to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Thomas. When we arrived, they ran extensive tests that revealed Soul was born with a Liver condition called OTC that doesn’t allow his liver to process the ammonia in his body. Within the 4 days we spent with him, the ammonia had spread throughout his little body. His ammonia levels were reaching 1,000, while manageable levels are 100 at most. On 01/11/2026, we spent the entire day with him. We were able to share music, movies, food, love, and stories about the family who loves him so much before bringing him down to the hospital's playground at sunset. That is where they removed his breathing tube. We were informed that he would have had anywhere from a few minutes to 1-2 hours. Our brave, strong little man lasted 3 hours. Even in his final hours, he fought to be with his family, away from the medical devices as he was meant to be. To be loved and to share his love with us by his own willpower. During the four days, he brought our family so much love, and we can only pray that we were able to give him everything he needed.
