Tommy Nuñez, 87, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026. Tommy is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Nuñez and Chonita Lonergan; siblings Joseph, Theresa, Mary “Lollie,” Steve, and Timmy; son-in-law Bob Whitman; and his cherished niece, Debbie. Born on September 10, 1938, in Santa Maria, California, Tommy moved to Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of three, where he was raised and built a life rooted in family, service, and community. He attended Phoenix public schools and later joined the United States Marine Corps at 17, earning his GED.
In 1956, he married his beloved wife, Mary Ann, beginning a nearly 70-year marriage filled with love and devotion. He is survived by his children, Tommy (Joanie), Donnie (Cathy), Colleen, and Debbie’s husband Freddie Santiago, as well as his 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.
A dedicated worker, Tommy spent his career with Western Electric while pursuing his passion for sports as an official in football, basketball, and baseball. His talent and presence on the court led to a distinguished 30-year career as an NBA referee beginning in 1972.
Tommy was a mentor, leader, and constant source of encouragement to many, especially young people, whom he inspired to pursue both athletics and education. He lived with gratitude, generosity, and a deep commitment to others.
He often said with pride, “I HAD A GOOD RUN,” a sentiment that reflects a life well lived and deeply loved. His words now stand as a powerful tribute to a life well lived.
