Peterson, H.B.

H.B. “Pete” Peterson passed away peacefully in his sleep January 14, 2010. He lived a full life. Survived by Lonnie, his wife of 53 years. Born in Rock Island, Il., (Dec 24, 1916) to Emil and Alvina, Pete was preceded in death by them and two sisters, Rose Marie and Dorothy. Graduated Rock Island High School, traveled west, attended University of Idaho, moved to Colorado Springs, married Maxine Craig a high school friend. They moved to Flagstaff in 1936; settled in Mesa (later divorced). They had two daughters. Pete married Lonnie; had a son, Mark, and became long-time Arcadia residents. In 1994 Pete and Lonnie moved to Maricopa “out to the ranch” – “El Rancho de los Palos Verdes.” As was his wish, the “Ranch” became Pete’s final resting place. Pete is survived by his children, Vicki Aguilar (Carlos), Sheila Bittle (Jerry), Mark Peterson (Yolanda), and grandchildren, Troy, Chantelle, Diane, Scott, Ashley, and Danny; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and numerous extended family and friends. An avid gardener, Pete’s desert landscape included many native plants and citrus trees. In his younger years he grew prize winning peace roses in the Arizona State fair. He completed his M.A. at ASU, specializing in Latin American history. Pete was a leader for social reform and civil rights. He was a Civilian Conservation Corpsman, telephone lineman and serviceman, AZ CWA President; teacher for Public Schools; visiting history instructor for Maricopa Community Colleges. Lectures always included “vignettes which won’t be found in your textbooks.” Living throughout eight plus decades added credence to his stories. As we become older we more and more realize Pete’s wisdom. Service will be held Wed. 1/20 at 1pm at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 3539 E. Stanford Dr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Mark Peterson, on behalf of Lonnie Peterson, 4111 N. 47th St., Phoenix, 85018.
