Passed away peacefully at home on January 12, 2009. Phil was born in Kerrville, Texas on August 18, 1930, to Phillip and Ethel Horton Rush and raised in Stamford, Texas. He graduated from Baylor University and went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne. After leaving the Army in l961, he continued to selflessly serve 27 years with the Central Intelligence Agency, retiring to Phoenix in l989. While stationed in Washington, DC, he met his wife, Mary Patricia Scott of Phoenix. Dad traveled the world, often times in places Americans were not always welcomed. Foreign travel was his passion and he always encouraged his children to seek an education through cultural experiences and academics. He loved watching his grandchildren splash around in the pool, barbequing his famous hamburgers, and fixing dinners for his working wife. Dad had a natural gift for making each person that spoke to him feel like they were part of his “inner sanctum”. His humor and wit will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Pat, his five children, Shawna Delzeith Tom of Ohio, Matthew Shannon of Colorado, Bridget Hurley PT, Paul Beth Hunt, Michael of Phoenix and grandchildren: Jonathan and Danielle Delzeith, Christopher Rush, Patrick, Moira and Rory Hurley. He is also survived by his loving sisters-in-law Margaret Gabaldon Tony deceased, Marion Steingrebe Ron, Cecilia Henderson Jay and Teresa Ann Jackson Don, Carmen Scott Joel deceased, aunt Teresa Scott of Douglas, cousins Sheila Rogers and Judy Engel and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Mary’s Basilica, 231 N. 3RD Street, Phoenix.
