Carrie Ann Phillips, 52, of Phoenix, AZ passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 19, 2023, two years after being diagnosed with gastric cancer.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Carrie attended Rancho Solano Preparatory School and Lookout Mountain Elementary School. She then attended Thunderbird High School, graduating with honors and earning Varsity Letters in Cross Country and Track & Field. After graduating high school, Carrie earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Arizona in 1993. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

Carrie continued her education, going on to receive a Doctor in Medicine from the University of Arizona in 1997. She started her post-doctoral training with a residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois. Following residency, she completed a Fellowship in Clinical Endocrinology at Northwestern’s Center for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine in 2003.

Along with the demands of her education, Carrie participated in several research studies and was co-author of eleven papers published in journals of science and medicine. She began her research career at the Barrow Neurological Institute while attending high school. During her undergraduate studies, she

worked with the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory, Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona. The study involved cardiovascular complications of diabetes, which she went on to present at the Experimental Biology 1993 National Conference. Carrie continued her graduate research with the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory. Once at Northwestern University, she furthered her diabetes research at the Center for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine. During her research career, Carrie was awarded eight grants and fellowships. In 1995, Carrie received the Trainee Investigator Award from the American Federation for Clinical Research and the Excellence in Research Award from the Western Student Medical Research Committee.

On March 7th , 1998, Carrie married her lifelong love, Jason Schwyn, after he graduated with a degree in structural engineering from The University of Arizona. After spending several years in Chicago, Carrie and Jason decided to return to Phoenix in 2003 and start a family. Their son, Jack, was born in November of the same year. Jack was the second love of Carrie’s life. Upon the couple’s return to Phoenix, Carrie started her professional career as a clinician at the Arizona Endocrinology Center. She went on to become a partner and would spend her entire career at the practice. One of Carrie’s favorite hobbies was archery. She competed at a national level in both paper and 3D target, with multinational tournaments in Arizona, Las Vegas, and California.

After her diagnosis, she sought treatment at Mayo Clinic to prolong her life. When the treatments had done all they could do, she spent her remaining time with her husband and son. Carrie passed peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side the day after their son returned to start his sophomore year at Purdue University.

Carrie is survived by her husband and son, Jason and Jack J. Schwyn, her parents, James and Diane (née Hanson) Phillips, her uncle and aunt, John S. and Joyce Phillips, cousins, Noel, Lee, and Kindra, and her grandmother, Mary-Ellen Phillips.

A Memorial Service will be held October 9th,  2-4 pm, at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018, (602.840.5600).  For those unable to attend, a live stream will be available at

A reception will be held after the service at Carrie and Jason’s home from, 5-7 pm. Hors D’oeuvres, sandwiches, and refreshments will be served.
