SHACKELFORD, JAMES “JIM” GORDON

September 4, 2015 Leave A Condolence

In Memorial

89, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on August 21, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer.  He was born in Phoenix on October 2, 1925 and raised in the Ellis-Shackelford House on Central Avenue.  Jim attended Kenilworth Grade School, Phoenix Union High School, University of Arizona and Arizona state University.  He was a loving husband of 58 years to Helen Metzger Shackelford who died in 2007.  Jim loved and embraced the adventures life offered.  He and Helen traveled all over the world and spent a great deal of time at the Flying M Ranch in Northern Arizona.  His career in dental supply sales took him all over the state giving him the opportunity to do what he loved most, connecting with people, telling stories and tinkering to fix just about anything.  He played the piano by ear and was an accomplished pilot.  He enlisted in the Air Force during WWII and was trained at Thunderbird Field, receiving his check flight from his own father.  He received his wings just before the war ended and was fortunate not to see combat.  Him was involved in many organizations including the Sheriff’s Air Posse and Silver Eagles, served on the board of the Arizona Historical Society and enjoyed the Polo Club.  He is loved and remembered for his gentle, happy spirit and being a good friend to all.  His death was preceded by his brother Ellis’ in 2013 and he leaves behind sister-in-law Sally Shackelford, nieces and nephews Diana Metzger Kessler, Kathryn Metzger, John Metzger, Sue Shackelford Spahle and Brian Shackelford along with many great nieces and nephews.  A celebration for this life well-lived will be at 6:00pm, Friday, October 2, 2015 (what would have been his 90th Birthday) at the Ellis-Shackelford House, 1242 N. Culver, Phoenix, AZ 85004.  Jim’s wishes were for contributions to be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ  85014.
