Barbara Ann Vaughn passed peacefully into the loving hands of God
at home on Saturday, June 5, 2010. She was surrounded by her
husband, Cy, and her loving family. Born Barbara Thompson in
Ballinger, Texas, on November 24, 1934, she grew up in Lake
Charles, Louisiana. At Lake Charles High School, Barbara and Cy
met and fell deeply in love. After encouraging Cy through medical
school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Barbara and Cy
moved their family to Phoenix in 1962. She is known affectionately
to her family and friends as “Oma,” a fitting reference to her extensive
travels in Germany and her accomplishments in German studies.
Barbara earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in German
Literature, with high honors, from Arizona State University.
She is survived by her best friend and husband, Cy Vaughn, and
her children: Vicki Roden and her husband, Michael, of Prescott;
Cecil Vaughn and his wife, Patty, of Phoenix; Katy Fielder and her
husband, John, of Phoenix; Mike Vaughn and his wife, Debbie, of
Rancho Santa Margarita, California; and Paul Vaughn and his wife,
Miriam, of Mesa. She is also survived by ten beautiful grandchildren
– Rachel Roberts and her husband, Chad; Amy Roden; Kelly Kramer
and her husband, Nick; Jenny Vaughn; Will and Jay Fielder; Erika
and Bryan Vaughn; and Karlee and Naomi Vaughn — and her first
great-grandchild, Jackson George Kramer.
Friends and family are invited to share in a celebration of Barbara’s
amazing life at 2 p.m. this Sunday, June 13, 2010, at First United
Methodist Church, 5510 North Central Avenue, in Phoenix. In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice
of the Valley in Barbara’s honor.
